It Takes a Community to Save a Child's Life
A child like Landon... click here for Landon's story.
A Community that includes... a Hospital like Lakeland Regional... a Team
of Nurses, Doctors and Rescue Responders... a Loving Family... and You!
Help make our new Pediatric Emergency Department at LRMC a reality!
Since 1986 the Pediatric Emergency Department at Lakeland Regional has been
taking care of children like Landon and their families. At that time Lakeland
Regional had the foresight to create a special emergency care center for
children with Pediatric-trained nurses and physicians and equipment made
specifically for young people.
And while the current 10-bed unit was an adequate space to treat our patients
at that time, the reality of today is that Lakeland has outgrown our Pediatric
Emergency facility. With anywhere from 85 - 100 visits per day, our department
is struggling to meet the demands of our community.
Our physicians and nurses are trained and equipped to take care of any emergency at any moment. We now need a facility that goes hand-in-hand with that - a state-of-the-art Pediatric Emergency Department to see to our children's needs now AND in the future.
A new Pediatric Emergency Department means:
- More Treatment Rooms - so that patients can be seen more quickly and privately
- A Dedicated Waiting Area - just for Pediatric patients and families so that our children are segregated from adult patients, illnesses, etc., and their families have a child-friendly place to wait
- New State-of-the-Art Pediatric Emergency Equipment - so that our children are getting the best care available
- Overflow Capability - the ability to flex-use other rooms in the Emergency Department as needed while not having to compromise the level of care given
- A Consultation Room - for families to converse with physicians, chaplains, social workers and other professionals in a private environment
- And the same outstanding care by our nursing staff and physicians.
Did you know?
- Children make up 27 percent of all Emergency Department visits, yet only 6 percent of Emergency Departments have the supplies necessary for handling Pediatric emergencies. - Institute of Medicine
- In only 10 years, LRMC's Pediatric Emergency Department patient volume has jumped from 21,000 to almost 31,000 visits per year (a 50 percent increase).
- The right equipment is crucial in saving the lives of children. An Intraosseous Needle, used to start IVs in children when traditional methods are unsuccessful, was used by Rescue Responders to help save Landon's life. This same piece of equipment was recently purchased through a Foundation grant for the Pediatric Emergency Department.
