Lights for Life NICU - The Jeffares Family
The Jeffares family has been blessed... and blessed... and blessed
Kim and Jack Jeffares had been through infertility treatments. There had been so much disappointment. And when they went for Kim’s ultrasound, they were ready for bad news. But that was not the case. In fact, three babies were growing inside of Kim. “We had never even thought about having triplets,” says Kim. “It was a shock, but at the same time, we were so excited.” Despite their hopes of Kim’s pregnancy lasting 32 weeks, the Jeffares triplets arrived after only 29 weeks and 5 days. “It was terrifying,” says Kim. “There were tons of people in the delivery room including three neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurses, the NICU nurse practitioner, a neonatologist, and two obstetricians.” But the delivery went phenomenally well. She recalls, “The babies came out screaming.” The babies were taken to the NICU, and Kim remembers, “They were so small. For the first two weeks, I afraid to hold them.” Amazingly, they passed every test with flying colors. Kim says, “You see these terrible things on TV, and you realize how lucky you are. It’s so scary when you hear the monitors go off, but they pull themselves out of it.” The Jeffares triplets spent a month and a half in the NICU. It was a difficult time. Not only was Jack working out of town, but, also, Kim was in and out of the hospital due to surgery complications. But despite their circumstances, they say the nurses and NICU staff went out of their way to accommodate them. They allowed other family members to visit the babies - including big brother Jackson. “Those nurses loved those boys,” Jack says. “We’ve got an ongoing relationship with them. We feel like they’re part of our family.” One nurse, Sheila Davis, still helps the Jeffares out when she can. According to Kim, “She’s like another grandmother to them.” Today, Drew, Miles and Cole are all doing well. Their parents have recognized their different personalities. Drew was the wildest during pregnancy, with Miles being a little wild and Cole being very mild. “They’ve kept those personalities,” say mom and dad. Plus she says, “The babies act so happy when they are together. Now, I can’t imagine not having triplets.”
